Sally’s painting “Boats From Kuraba – Plein Air”, 75x100cm, oil on canvas, has been selected as a FINALIST in the 2014 ANL Maritime Art Awards. Since 2002 the Mission to Seafarers Victoria maritime art prize has exhibited the work of over 700 artists and fast become recognised as Australia’s leading maritime art award. Prize money awarded to date has exceeded $129,000 and the organisation has raised approximately $180,000 toward the provision of seafarers’ welfare services in Victoria. 

Sally West has been selected as a FINALIST in this year’s Redland Art Awards with this painting titled “City From Balls Head In Rain – Plein Air”, 125x125cm, oil on canvas.

Redland Art Awards is a biennial contemporary painting competition open to all Australian artists, presented by Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland, Queensland. Redland Art Awards 2014 features four prizes, totalling over $20,000. 

Sally West’s Art Of Still Life Exhibition opens on 6 Setpember 2014 at The Fellia Melas Gallery, 2 Moncur Street, Woollahra 2-4pm. All are welcome to meet the artist.

“I have been painting en plein air landscapes for many years and have only recently discovered the joy of painting still life. It seems to me that still life is an extension of en plein air painting as I attempt to capture the spontaneous nature of the subject and light, approaching it in a similar way. Everyday objects, not just flowers, become objects of impressionistic beauty.”

On Saturday 9 November Sally West’s “Valla Beach” (75x75cm, oil on canvas) was named WINNER of the Painting Category at the 2013 Hornsby Art Prize. It’s a great honour for Sally and another major milestone in her career.

Sally West was lucky enough to meet Ben Mendelsohn during 2012 and he agreed to sit for her. The sitting took about 3 hours and the painting took many weeks to create. It is large enough at 150x150cm and is bold in its application. Large slabs of paint applied with a palette knife has created a highly textured and varied canvas. The Portia Geach Memorial Award is a celebration of female Australian artists. It’s Australia’s most prestigious portrait prize for female artists and has greatly contributed to the development of female artists in this country. Sally is honoured to be included.
